I often get asked: “Matt, if my lights aren’t flickering and my breakers aren’t tripping, why should I be worried about my wiring?” It’s a fair question. Most of us assume that if the coffee pot is running, everything behind the scenes is just fine. The Hazard Hiding Behind the Drywall

Most residential electrical fires don’t happen all at once. They start with a tiny spark—what we call an arc fault. It can be something as simple as a nail that nicked a wire when you hung a picture, or a lamp cord that’s been pinched behind the sofa for five years.

Unlike a standard short circuit, these tiny sparks don’t always draw enough current to trip a conventional breaker. However, they generate intense heat—we’re talking upwards of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That is more than enough to ignite wood framing or insulation inside your walls long before you ever smell smoke.

Is Your Home Protected?

If your home was built or last updated before the early 2000s, there is a high probability you don’t have AFCI protection. The National Electrical Code (NEC) has evolved for a reason. The technology to detect these dangerous “signatures” before they ignite a fire exists, and it is incredibly effective.

Upgrading to AFCI breakers doesn’t require tearing down walls or a massive remodel. It’s one of those upgrades that won’t make your lights any brighter, but it will let you sleep a whole lot better.
